Anatomy Academy

Anatomy Academy
Demythifying and demystifying anatomy and yoga

Have you ever felt confused or intimidated by anatomical cues offered in a yoga class? Are you looking for a way to retain and explore anatomical teachings offered in prior trainings? Are you curious about movement and the human body? If so, Anatomy Academy is for you!

Join me for Anatomy Academy, a series online workshops where we focus on yoga asana through the lens of the applied anatomy and physiology - plus a few other areas of study. These fun, interactive workshops (a balance of lecture and play) each feature a theme that forms the foundation for an exploration.

Anatomy Academy can be taken as a series or as individual workshops, as your schedule allows. Appropriate for yoga teachers, student-teachers and anyone else who is curious about the body and movement, no prior anatomy expertise required. All you need is curiosity, a willingness to learn and a decent wifi connection.

Upcoming workshop topics and registration details are below. I happily accept requests for discussion topics. Just click on "Contact Me" anywhere on this site to submit your request. See you soon!

Upcoming Workshops

Knees: The Middle Child

Knees are like the middle children of the body. Stuck between the feet and the hips, they are often asked to navigate and assume unique stresses and forces when the joints above and below are not doing their fair share of work. We will explore the knee anatomy; how yoga asana can support these joints; and possibly deMYTHify some common yoga teachings (e.g., foot on inner knee in tree pose can be safely practiced).

Saturday, 6/26/21,
2:00-3:45pm (EST)

The Anatomy of the Breath

Breathing is essential and elemental. We breathe ~22,000 times per day - mostly unknowingly. But we can come to know our the breath through study and exploration. During this workshop we will discuss the anatomy and the physiology of breathing. Topics will include how pressure differentials create the direction of the breath (the Universe truly breathes us) and the interconnectivity of the breath with the entirety of the body.

Saturday 9/11/21,
2:00-3:45pm (EST)

The Spine

Did you know that walking (ambulation) is initiated from the twelfth thoracic vertebrae? During this workshop we will explore the spinal anatomy as well as the actions and functions of the spine. Topics to be discussed include intervertebral discs and the effects of forward bends and back bends upon these structures (spoiler alert: doing a forward bend immediately after a back bend is not inherently structurally dangerous).

Fall 2021 - specific date TBD,
